Life is Change

Human beings are contrary when it comes to what they believe life should be for themselves. Some to a great degree while others to a minimal degree. Still, others are floating in between the two extremes. Nevertheless, all of us invalidate ourselves when it comes to what we expect life to give us.

According to The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, life is a metamorphosis. In other words, life is change, pure and simple. Yet, people want the perpetual transformation to stop. The yearning is either because everything appears to be going so well for them and, therefore, don’t want it to vanish. Or, because they believe a stop point to access examination or reboot all together will help them correct whatever they feel is wrong in their life.

When COVID-19 hit the world, I remember toying with the idea of life standing dormant while the pandemic went on around me. Obviously, my thinking was a false inference because life, change, metamorphosis has never stopped its progress at any point during this burdensome time, and it never will. We’ve been forced to make harsh alterations in our daily lives and accept losses at every turn to copy with the appalling disease. Most of the people I know were wishing and hoping life would go back the way it was before the epidemic hit. And I think they believed it could actually happen somehow even though the rational part of their brains were screaming out, “No way!” Some of those same people have gotten a grip on the reality of the situation, but others have not. I can only guess that the ones not facing the truth are living a delusion.

Everything that is part of life or is associated with life in some way changes constantly—even rocks.

Do we reach for the unbelievable surmise that we can stop life because we think so slow-wittedly? Or could it be just the opposite? Do we know slightly too much, so we don’t leave truth alone?

As children, did we question such facts? Some may say these facts weren’t in our realm of reality yet. Well, I remember the science teacher I had in my fifth and sixth grade years of elementary school discussing such facts in class. I didn’t question Mr. Hay’s wisdom.

I want to ask why our society, our global civilization insisted on trying to manipulate life when it’s obvious there isn’t any way to do that. That’s what I want to ask, but I already know it’s because of false beliefs that have been with us since the days before Moses.

As I grow older, I’ve learned to pick my battles in life. The famous quote from Paul McCarthy comes to mind when I consider life. “Let it be.” We shouldn’t be expecting anything from life except what it is, change.

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.”
― Lao Tzu

  1. Change is inevitable, it is the one constant in life. And it needs to change, we can’t expect life to remain at a standstill, that is not moving forward or growing.
    Great article, Glynis. 🙂

    1. “We didn’t know a lot about life that long ago!”

Back then, of course, we didn’t know anything about life as we know it now. Still, I don’t think that means humanity about a lot of the immense significance of life. They probably knew more than we do know. These days we tend to let life just drift past us not giving it much thought.
